NAGPUR: The government needs to give a quick and befitting reply to Pakistan as the people are seething with anger after terrorist attack at Pulwama in Kashmir in which 40 personnel of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed, said former colonel Abhay Patwardhan on Saturday.
Delivering a lecture on ‘War for independence’, organized by Dr Hedgewar Vyaspeeth at Dharampeth Mulanchi Shala, Patwardhan said the government has various options to choose from like launching a surgical strike, firing missiles or air attacks.
However, he said, cutting off water supply or diverting streams should not be one of the options. A lot of time and resources will be required to divert such huge water bodies and connect to Yamuna river which is not affordable. “We need immediate action and not long term plans,” said Patwardhan.
He said promises made by politicians should not always be taken seriously. “Former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had once said promises given by politicians when elections are round the corner should not be taken seriously. The government weighing the option of cutting off water supply to Pakistan falls in this category,” he said.
“People say we should have taken Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir during 1947-51. But an army of four lakh soldiers couldn’t possibly have guarded the national borders from Pakistan and China. The two British battalions deployed for our safety also shook hands with Pakistan. We were left in knee deep waters and that’s why the then Prime Minister had to approach the United Nations on the issue.”
Patwardhan also dwelt at length about various issues on independence and wars with Pakistan and China.
