A 75-year-old man was found dead by his wife and daughter in his house at NMDC Colony of Malkajgiri in the early hours of Saturday.
D. Jagannadham, a retired private employee, was depressed over Income Tax notices and committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan, Malkajgiri police said.
A note purportedly written by the victim stated that he sold his Musheerabad house to their distant relative in 2000 for ₹6.10 lakh, but the transaction registration was done in 2010.
The IT department recently issued a notice to him seeking details of the difference of amount on value at the time of registration, which was about ₹30 lakh, the note read.
‘Cheated by relatives’
Police said Jagannadham blamed his relatives who purchased the house for ₹6.10 lakh and paid the amount in instalments, but showed the registration value as ₹30 lakh, for which the I-T department was seeking clarifications from him. “I was cheated by my own relatives,” the note read.
Malkajgiri police said Jagannadham resorted to the extreme step between 3.30 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Saturday and the incident came to light after his wife found him hanging.
The couple’s son lives in the neighbouring locality, while their married daughter stays with him, as her husband works for a private firm abroad, cops said.
