The intersection of the Royapettah High Road and Peter’s Road, near the Government Royapettah General Hospital, is narrow, given the volume of vehicles passing through it. MTC buses, especially during rush hour, can be seen struggling through this narrow section.
There is another dimension to the challenge encountered by motorists here: Inadequate traffic regulation, including traffic signals that are mostly non-functioning (at the time of this article going to print, this problem was persisting ) and motorists waiting at the intersection chafing at the bit and trying to get past the section in the least amount of time possible.
“Most of the time, the traffic signal does not work allowing motorists including motorcyclists and autorickshaw drivers coming from all directions to cross the intersection at the same time resulting in accidents,” K. Vinod, a motorist from Ice House.
Due to all of these factors, crossing the intersection is time-consuming during rush hour. And sometimes, this intersection appears accident-prone, due to the aforementioned factors.
The intersection connects Royapettah High Road in Mylapore with Peter’s Road in Royapettah. Lack of traffic regulation including non-functioning of the traffic signal, residents and motorists say, is the reason for traffic violations at the intersection.
The intersection has also a few key public facilities including the Royapettah General Hospital, a police station and a government school nearby. As a result, movement of people including pedestrians and cyclists is high on the stretches around the intersection.
“Steps will be taken to prevent traffic violations and there will be permanent deployment of traffic police personnel at the intersection soon,” the police said.
