GURUGRAM: The state pollution control board, HSPCB, has sent a notice to MCG over an illegal dumping yard that came up in Ghata around seven months ago.
The corporation has been instructed to immediately take action against those who are felling trees to make space for the dumping yard near the catchment of Ghata lake, which is an ecologically sensitive area. “The garbage received from Gurugram has been dumped… near village Ghata where labourers are illegally handling municipal solid waste and burning it. It is a gross violation of the directions of National Green Tribunal/ Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA) and Municipal Solid Waste Rules, 2016. The garbage and construction waste being dumped illegally at Ghata has resulted in a big dump yard of an area of at least 1 acre or more... (It) is an organised, planned phenomenon happening over the last few months and conveniently ignored and overlooked by MCG, thereby creating a new undesignated, unauthorised, illegal landfill,” states the notice.
TOI had highlighted the issue in a report published on January 28. Spread over an area of three acres along the Rajesh Pilot Marg, the dumping yard was a thickly-wooded expanse with over 500 trees and thriving wildlife just a year ago.
According to HSPCB officials, the board will discuss the issue with the EPCA next week. “We are going to take up the issue of illegal waste dumping at Ghata and other places in the city. We have already instructed MCG to take action immediately. We are also preparing a report of all undesignated waste dumping spots in the city,” said a senior HSPCB official.
