While some may have thought that Balaji would carry his Radio Jockey image, it is a pleasant surprise to see him transform from a character artiste and a comedian into a hero with LKG. However, more than an actor, Balaji shines as a writer. His dialogues and screenplay which have contributed to the success of the film. He has cashed in on his boy-next-door image and has come out with a relatable performance. Priya Anand’s role as Sarala is exemplary. Every character in the film has shades of grey, but Sarala’s various transformations for the role are yet another value addition to the story. Nanjil Sampath steals the show with his usual flamboyance. He plays LKG’s dad and a small-time politician and is tailor-made for the role. JK Rithesh as Ramaraj Pandian is a surprise package and Ramkumar has played his part well. Overall, RJ Balaji and co have passed LKG in flying colours.
The film begins with Lalgudi Karuppaiah Gandhi aka LKG (RJ Balaji) being sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Within the first couple of minutes, the story travels back to Lalgudi, a town near Tiruchy where he is elected as the councillor at the age of 29. The story garners interest from the beginning as LKG is portrayed with both good and bad sides to his character. The first half is about Karuppaiah’s success as a councillor. It gets interesting as we are introduced to more characters as the film moves at a rapid pace. The second half also maintains the momentum and builds up towards the climax that is one-of-its-kind in Tamil cinema of late. The film that talks about the present political scenario of Tamil Nadu has taken a dig at a few politicians, providing a good laugh. Casting real-life politcians like Nanjil Sampath and JK Rithesh have added more value to the film.
