NEW DELHI: Increased awareness about the importance of girl child and government schemes like ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ has led to a record sex ratio at birth in Delhi — 913 girls per 1,000 boys in 2017.
In 2016, 2015 and 2014, this figure stood at 902, 898 and 896, respectively. The latest report, based on provisional data from Civil Registration System, shows the capital witnessed 3.7 lakh births in 2017. Of this, 52.6% were boys, while 47.4% were girls.
“Increased awareness and the fear of law against sex-selective abortions have led to this success,” said an official. Delhi government had recently approved a scheme to reward informers with Rs 1.5 lakh.
Under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PC & PNDT), 1994, a reward of Rs 50,000 is given to a person who informs about unregistered or registered centres/machines and any other violation of PC & PNDT Act. An additional incentive of Rs 1,50,000 is given to decoy pregnant woman (posing as customers).
The first instalment of Rs 50,000 is given after the successful completion of the operation, while the second instalment of Rs 1,00,000 is given after submission of the statement in the court. “However, the informer shall not be compensated in any form if the decoy operation is unsuccessful,” the official added.
The scheme aims to improve the child sex ratio by ensuring punitive action against those involved in activities directly or indirectly related to sex-selective abortions/conceptions. “Approval is also given to create awareness and to rope in members of the civil society for the cause and to effectively stop the misuse of PC & PNDT Act,” he said.
As per the CRS data, the sex ratio at birth witnessed an encouraging trend from 809/1,000 in 2001 to 848 and 886 in 2007 and 2012, respectively.
