Man sentenced to 10 years RI for raping minor girl

The II Additional District and Sessions Judge, Pallavi B.R, on Friday sentenced 44-year-old Chandrakant to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 for raping a 11-year-old girl last year.

The trial was completed within nine months from the date of incident.

The case had been filed by the city’s Women’s Police Station.

According to the complaint, Chandrakant had raped the girl in his house on May 2, 2018. His wife saw the incident and filed the complaint with the Women’s Police Station.

Chargesheet filed

Inspector K. Kalavati arrested Chandrakant and subsequently filed a chargesheet against him.

Special Public Prosecutor C. Venkataswamy examined eight witnesses before the court.

The victim, her mother, and another relative turned hostile and denied the rape. The doctor, who had examined the victim, produced a report confirming the rape.

The judge considered evidences of the doctor and the investigating officer and convicted Chandrakanth under Section 6 of Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Of the fine amount, the judge said ₹9,000 should be paid to the victim.

The judge directed the District Legal Services Authority to consider the girl for payment of compensation under the Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme.
