‘Use drama with reasoning for impact’

NAGPUR: The real meaning of religion is not to give pain to others. However, religion is being ‘redefined’ in which those not accepting the ‘new tenets’ are labelled as the ones going against it and called traitors was the lament of noted playwright Mahesh Elkunchwar on Friday.
He was speaking after inaugurating the four-day 99th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Sammelan, organized at Ram Ganesh Gadkari Natyanagari, Reshimbagh. President of the drama festival Premanand Gajvi was seated on the dais, besides mayor Nanda Jichkar.
Outgoing president of the natya sammelan Kirti Shiledar, president of Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad Prasad Kambli, working president of the festival Girish Gandhi and Prafulla Farkase were also seated on the dais.
Talking tough, Elkunchwar cited the examples of ban on books, dramas and the killing of Safdar Hashmi and said “we as people and the rulers were never tolerant”. He said he has become fearful of some words these days and therefore questions come to mind whether these should be used or not. There is a need to ponder over the meaning of some words. It should be noted that philosophy evolves with discussions, he added.
Gajvi said, “Reservation has become kind of a mental illness as the people of almost every caste are asking for it.” He however said, “It was assured while embracing the Constitution that every person of the country will be made happy and that social and financial equality will be ensured. But it did not happen.”
“A society dies when creation of thoughts is suppressed. It is an irony that some elements with nefarious designs hold writers and artistes to ransom if something goes against their way of thinking. But nobody is punished and the goons continue to have a free run,” Gajvi said in his hard-hitting speech.
Elkunchwar and Gajvi made a strong pitch for using the medium of drama with articulation and proper reasoning for leaving a lasting impact on the society.
Jichkar said she felt elated that the drama festival was being held in Nagpur after a gap of 34 years.
Earlier, the programme started with Natraj puja and lighting of a traditional lamp.
Before the inaugural ceremony, a moment’s silence was observed to pay tributes to the brave soldiers who died in a terrorist attack at Pulwama in Kashmir.
