NAGPUR: Corridors of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College, Deekshabhoomi, buzzed with frenzied activities on Thursday as students and participants hurried toward various competitions.
Mock courtrooms made for holding moot court competitions saw hectic activities as the judges keenly observed the teams presenting their respective cases. All this bustle was going on as part of the college’s national level competition ‘Law Vision 2019’ in which hundreds of students from all over the country participated.
The ongoing competition, inaugurated on Wednesday, is aimed at testing students in various pursuits of law like legal drafting, arguing in courts, client counselling and their overall personality. This all-inclusive competition has students from Bengaluru, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra.
“These competitions will be a mirror for students on how well they fare in real life situations. We need to prepare them to face clients and judges for future,” said professor Pratima Lokhande, organizing secretary.
Legal drafting competition will judge a student’s drafting capabilities. “Drafting affidavits, filing petitions and other legal paperwork is a must and a basic skill that a good lawyer should be able to do and we will test them on such nuances,” said Lokhande.
Client counselling and moot court are other fronts in which students participated. “Giving legal advice is a lawyer’s job for which they have to be sound researchers. Different situations are given to the participants and they have to give legal advice to their imaginary clients. They also have to provide a sound reasoning as to why they handed that advice. Winners of all these competitions will be awarded cash prizes,” said Lokhande.
“Similarly, moot courts test the lawyers’ overall performance. Prizes of best mooter, researcher, memorial and winning teams will be handed out based on the parameters like how they talk, present their case, body language and research,” she added.
The judges of these competitions are high court lawyers Ritesh Tahiliyani, Kaustubh Patil, Priti Rane, Deol Pathak, Suyog Deshpande and Tejas Deshpande.
The valedictory and prize distribution ceremony will be held on February 23 in the presence of advocate Anand Jaiswal.
