Channel Nine is preparing to launch its replacement footy show just weeks out from the start of the AFL season.

Crocmedia boss Craig Hutchison has been in talks with Nine for months and it's understood the show was given the green light this week, the Herald Sun reported.

The new player-driven format will give some of the game's biggest stars the opportunity to have a voice as they rotate through the panel.

Among the potential players rumored to appear on the panel are Richmond’s Alex Rance, Carlton’s Sam Docherty and Hawthorn’s Jarryd Roughead.

Despite being only weeks away from the start of the AFL season, Nine has stated they are committed to having a football presence on Thursday night.

Eddie McGuire’s production company JAM TV hopes the new line-up and format will rival Channel 7's The Front Bar, the Herald Sun previously reported.

While it's not clear whether the hosting role will go to a comedian or news man, Sam McClure's name has been thrown into the mix as potential host.

Nine reporter Seb Costello has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for the new host - although nothing has officially been locked in.

Among other potential panelists who might make an appearance is Sri Lankan comedian Dilruk Jayasinha, who took home the Best New Talent Logie last year.

Crocmedia bosses are rumoured to have met with two major management groups - Paul Connors and TLA - to gauge their support of the new format.

In addition to the footy show, the Australian-American radio and TV distribution company already provides football content for Nine's under-18 Future Stars show.
