Screening committee to study applications, narrow down names

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Sheila Dikshit on Thursday said that the election committee of the party has decided that Congress president Rahul Gandhi will take a final call on candidates for the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, for which 70 leaders have filed applications.

Resolution passed

“A resolution was presented and unanimously passed in which it was stated that Congress president Rahul Gandhi will be authorised to finalise and select the names of party candidates for all the seven parliamentary constituencies in Delhi for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Congress workers in Delhi will wholeheartedly support the candidates given to us by the party president and work tirelessly to make sure that the Congress is victorious on all the seven Lok Sabha seats in the city,” Ms. Dikshit said while reading out the resolution that was passed.

A screening committee — comprising Ms. Dikshit, AICC in-charge of Delhi unit P.C. Chacko, AICC secretary Kujit Nagra and AICC general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal — will study the applications and narrow down the list, which will be presented to Mr. Gandhi.

Ms. Dikshit also said that she was never approached by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to forge an alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, as claimed by him, and asserted that the AAP leader has reached the “stage of frustration”.

The former Chief Minister was referring to a speech made by Mr. Kejriwal on Wednesday in which he had claimed that AAP leaders were tired of trying to convince the Congress to form an alliance with the party.
