Under-repair barrage collapses, 2 escape

Belagavi: Two persons had a providential escape when the under-repair bridge-cum-barrage on Malaprabha river at Bevinakopp village in Bailhongal taluk collapsed on Friday, and their car sank in the waters.
Chidanand Chiniwalar of Bailhongal was heading towards Kittur from his native place in a car along with his friend. While the car was moving on the barrage, the bridge collapsed suddenly. However, Chidanand and his friend escaped unhurt.
Farmers in the area rushed to the rescue and pulled out the car using a rope. The barrage was under repair since the past several months. This was the same barrage that was washed away in the last monsoon. There were several complaints about the work being substandard. No case has been registered in connection with the case.
