Squad faces resistance from villagers to police action

Vajid Khan, 28, one of the suspects in a series of ATM theft cases in Kozhikode district, was arrested from a Haryana village on Thursday. A team led by Circle Inspector A. Umesh traced him.

Mr. Umesh said Vajid Khan was arrested on the basis of location details provided by the Kozhikode Cyber Cell. The local police in Haryana’s Mewat district too helped the five-member squad conduct a raid in the hideout, he added.

Resistance

According to officials, there were attempts on the part of some villagers to resist police action and free the accused. But the Haryana Police extended timely support and foiled them, they said.

The police ventured into the inter-State inquiry on the directive of District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) Sanjaykumar Gurudin. In the preliminary investigation, it was found that the suspect had involvement in ATM thefts in various parts of Kerala, New Delhi, and Faridabad. His gang was also found targeting nationalised banks.

The police had registered as many as 11 major ATM theft cases at the Town station alone last year. Five of them were arrested last year. The police said search was on to find out those who had jumped bail.
