BENGALURU: Karnataka politicians are donating generously to the family of H Guru, the CRPF jawan martyred in the Pulwama attack. His kin in Mandya received Rs 27 lakh from Congress leaders on Thursday.
Besides, Sumalatha, wife of late actor-politician MH Ambareesh, met Guru’s family members and promised to give them half an acre of irrigated land at Doddarasinakere village, which is the ancestral property of her husband. The land parcel is 3km away from Gudigere, where Guru’s family stays. Ambareesh owned 8.5 acres of ancestral land in Doddarasinakere and had transferred it to his son Abhishek in his lifetime.
Of the Rs 27 lakh, food and civil supplies minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan handed over a cheque of Rs 10 lakh to Guru’s wife Kalavathi from the Karnataka State Wakf Council and another Rs 10 lakh in his individual capacity. Congress MLC Rizwan Arshad, who accompanied Ahmed, gave her a cheque of Rs 5 lakh, party MLA NA Haris Rs 5 lakh and KPCC general secretary GA Bawa Rs 1 lakh.
The Karnataka government has already given the slain soldier’s family a compensation of Rs 25 lakh, while BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa has donated Rs 1 lakh in his individual capacity. The Life Insurance Corporation transferred insurance money to the account of Guru’s wife within a day, without seeking documents. “I met the family members of Guru and presented a cheque of Rs 5 lakh. No compensation can fill the void in their lives, but we share a moral responsibility to support them by all possible means. Let’s do our bit,” Arshad said.
Guru, 33, from Gudigere village in Mandya district, belonged to the 82nd Battalion of CRPF and was posted in Srinagar. According to his relatives, Guru had come home and left for Kashmir on February 11. He had joined the CRPF in 2011 and was deployed in Jharkhand as part of the 94th Battalion before being posted in J&K.
The CM has promised a government job to Kalavathi. “It’s heart-wrenching. The government will provide a job to Kalavathi,” he had said last week.
