180 youths from fishermen community to join coastal police

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 180 youths from fishermen community will be formally inducted to the coastal police division of the state police as as coastal wardens on Tuesday.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will formally induct the youths to the force, who are being appointed on contract basis, for one year. The coastal wardens will be paid a consolidated remuneration of Rs 19,000 per month.
After being inducted, they will be put on a four-month training programme at the Kerala Police Academy, from Wednesday. “The training for coastal wardens will include basics of the police department along with detailed sessions on search and rescue operations. For training them, we will take the help of experts from Navy and Coast Guard. There will be detailed practical sessions on the work they are expected to perform,” state police chief Loknath Behera said.
Police have also designed special uniform for the coastal wardens on the lines of the coverall uniform of the Navy personnel. They will also have a baseball cap. “The uniform has been designed taking in to consideration the convenience for them while conducting rescue operations in the water,” Behera said.
According to sources in the coastal police division, as many as 3,000 candidates had applied for the 200 vacancies, for which the required educational qualification was SSLC.
The coastal wardens will be deployed at the 14 coastal police stations out of 18 stations in the state.
