Bhubaneswar: To ensure peaceful elections, Odisha police on Friday sought the cooperation of its counterparts in neighbouring West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Jharkhand to intensify vigil on the inter-state borders, combat Maoists and organised crimes.
Senior police officers from the five states attended a high-level meeting with Odisha police here and pledged to coordinate with each other for an incident-free election. Odisha director general of police (DGP) R P Sharma said efforts are being made to launch border ‘naka’ or joint checking exercises till the elections are over.

“We have extended our cooperation to the neighbouring states and received assurance of their coordination to ensure peaceful elections in the states. We will jointly work on real-time sharing of intelligence inputs, countering Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) and organised crimes, crackdown on narcotics smugglers, firearms traders and cash transports, Sharma told TOI. The top cop said though LWE activities are under control in the state, the situation is dynamic and likely to throw a challenge during the elections. The DGP said steps are being taken to identify the militia, who have been supplying money and providing logistics support to Maoists in the state.

Sharma proposed mutual exchange of manpower to address the shortfall of human resources in the police in the states. “Since elections will be held in different phases, we may share manpower among the states. We will send our personnel to neighbouring states after the end of elections. The other states should also support us by sending their personnel to Odisha,” Sharma said.

Additional chief secretary (home department) Asit Kumar Tripathy lauded the efforts of the neighbouring states in successfully launching joint anti-Maoist operations in the border areas. “We need to continue to coordinate with each other. We have excellent cooperation with neighbouring states in tackling LWE,” Tripathy said.

Andhra Pradesh’s additional director general of police (operations, Greyhounds and Octopus) Nalin Prabhat said seamless exchange of intelligence and timely execution of inputs are the need of the hour. “We are having very good understanding with Odisha police and have successfully carried out a number of operations against Maoists,” Prabhat said.

Chhattisgarh’s deputy inspector general (intelligence) Amresh Mishra said its police have started preparations to check inter-state crimes ahead of elections. “On Tuesday, we were successful in seizing nearly Rs 11 crore cash that was being transported from Bhubaneswar. We (Chhattisgarh and Odisha) have been mutually cooperating with each other. We recently conducted the assembly polls smoothly despite LWE threat,” Mishra said.

At the meeting, Medinapur’s deputy inspector general Devendra Prakash Singh laid stress on inter-state exchange of inputs about criminals and ‘naka’ checking.
