MUMBAI: The University Grants Commission (UGC), the All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and other central academic bodies, on Friday, issued an advisory to vice-chancellors and principals across the country to ensure safety and protection of Kashmiri students on their campuses, in the wake of the Pulwama attack. Though no complaints have been reported in the city, two Kashmiri students were allegedly assaulted by Yuva Sena activists in Yavatmal in Maharashtra on Thursday.
The advisory issued by the UGC, stated that the higher educational institutions are advised to ensure safety of students on their campuses. It further mentioned that the institution heads can keep a watch on the situation and seek support of law and order machinery in case of untoward incident. Principals have been asked to personally ensure that peace and harmony are maintained on the campuses.
AICTE too issued a similar mail to all the technical colleges and universities, following a phone call by regional officers. "All students from Jammu and Kashmir under the Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme should be taken care of as their own sons and daughters and necessary support should be extended to them," states the mail. Law and order problems should be reported to local administration for support, it said.
In Yavatmal, a Yuva Sena activist allegedly attacked two Kashmiri students and posted the video on his social media page. Yuva Sena Chief, Aditya Thackeray, in a tweet on Friday, said that the activist was sacked from the party. 'J&K is a part of India and no Indian, or for that matter, nobody should face the brunt of anger that is towards terrorism. We understand the angst, but it must be against terror, not innocent people', said his tweet.
A principal from a suburban college said, "The central government has been trying to give opportunities to aspirational youths from the valley. Such incidents may drive bright students away."
Though not many cases have been reported from the state, there have been protests against Kashmiri students in some regions in the north, especially Uttarakhand.
