Lankan navy arrests five more fishermen

A day after arresting 13 fishermen, Sri Lankan Navy has arrested five more fishermen from Pamban in Rameswaram island, along with their vessel, for “trespassing into the territorial waters of the island nation”.

The fishermen, who had set out for fishing on Thursday, were fishing on the high seas northwest of Arippu beacon when the Lankan navy apprehended them, reports received here said. Sri Lankan naval craft attached to the North-Central Naval Command apprehended the fishermen and their trawler, the reports said.

The Lankan navy personnel, after completing basic medical tests, handed over the arrested fishermen to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Mannar. Later, the fishermen were produced before a magistrate court in Mannar which remanded them in judicial custody in Vavuniya prison till March 8, the reports said.

The Lanan navy had on Wednesday night arrested 13 fishermen – eight from Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district and five from Jagadapattinam in Pudukottai district – along with three trawlers.
