GURUGRAM: A gangster was killed during a shootout with police while his three accomplices were arrested in Mewat on Thursday. Arshad (30) had a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head. The gunfight between the police team and the accused went on for around half an hour, in which a constable suffered injuries.
Arshad was wanted in at least eight cases registered in Mewat and Palwal in Haryana and Rajasthan. He was charged with attempt to murder, robbery, dacoity, causing hurt and rioting among others. Arshad was acquitted in two criminal cases registered in Palwal, but was facing serious criminal charges in five other cases. The shootout took place in Bisru village.
A seven-member team of Gurugram police along with cops from Rewari raided the outskirts of Bisru around 9am Thursday. Arshad was a resident of the same village. The accused opened fire at police after spotting them. One of the bullets hit constable Pawan on the right hand and another on his chest. He didn’t suffer serious injuries as he had worn a bullet-proof jacket. After the police team was fired at, they retaliated, in which Arshad was injured. He was declared brought dead in Mewat’s Mandi Khera government hospital. His accomplices Ikram (38), Yameen (36) and Azad (45) were arrested.
The raid was conducted after police received a tip-off on Ikram, wanted in an attempt to murder case at Bichhor police station. He was hiding in the village with his gang members. Ikram carries a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. He is involved in nine cases registered in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal and Rajasthan for attempt to murder, robbery, theft and rioting. He is also booked under the Gangster Act at Barsana police station in Mathura. However, he has been on the run.
Sangeeta Kalia, superintendent of police in Mewat, said, “During the cross firing, cops fired four rounds while the gangsters fired three shots. A police vehicle was also hit by one of the bullets fired by the accused,” she said. Cops seized three country-made pistols and 69 cartridges from them.
