Cape Town - Sri Lankan spinner Lasith Embuldeniya will almost certainly not bowl in the second Test against the Proteas in Port Elizabeth.
The 22-year-old, who made his debut in the first Test in Durban, dislocated his thumb while trying to take a catch on day one of the second Test at St. George's Park.
It is a massive blow to Sri Lanka's chances of becoming the first ever Asian side to win a Test series in South Africa.
Embuldeniya claimed five wickets in the second innings in Durban and would have been key to Sri Lanka's endeavours in the second innings in PE.
According to a report on Cricinfo, he will "almost certainly" play no further part in PE and is expected to be out of action for around six weeks.
The report added that the left-arm orthodox spinner faces around six weeks on the sidelines.
