LUCKNOW: Showing no fear of men in khaki, two imposters posing as policemen duped the mother of a police sub-inspector near IG range office in Vineet Khand of Gomtinagar on Thursday afternoon.
The victim’s son Pramod Kumar is posted at UP DGP office in Lucknow.
The two miscreants were also caught on CCTV installed in a nearby building.
Ratna Devi, 66, was returning to her home on IG range campus in Vineet Khand after shopping when she was stopped by two ‘policemen’ who claimed they were on patrol duty. The duo told Ratna Devi that she should not move around wearing gold ornaments as that can invite robbers.
“The conmen convinced Ratna Devi to wrap her jewellery in a paper sheet provided by them. As she followed their request, one of them engaged her in a conversation while the other changed her bangles with plastic ones,” said CO Gomtinagar AC Srivastava.
When Ratna reached her home, she was shocked to found plastic bangles wrapped in the paper sheet. “Such imposters’ modus operandi is warn, change jewellery and flee. Conmen scare elderly women by saying they will be targeted by robbers if they move around wearing jewellery,” SSP Kalanidhi Naithani said SSP said the incident had been captured on a CCTV camera and the footage was being scanned to identify the accused.
An FIR has been registered under charges of cheating and theft.
