Ludhiana: Seeking a person’s help to withdraw money from an ATM in Raikot proved costly for a villager, after the unidentified miscreant allegedly replaced his card with the villager’s and transferred Rs90,000 into an unknown account. Police have booked the unidentified accused, and were trying to identify him.

In his police complaint, Jaswant Singh of Govindwal told police he had come to a Punjab National Bank (PNB) ATM in Raikot city to withdraw money for personal use on February 2. He added that outside the ATM, he asked an unidentified person standing there to withdraw cash from his account, and handed him his ATM card.

The complainant said the accused took his ATM card and withdrew Rs10,000 each twice from his account. He added that when he returned the ATM card, he changed it with his own. Jaswant Singh said that on February 4, the unidentified miscreant withdrew Rs90,000 from his account, and transferred it to some unknown account. He said the accused had played a fraud with him by changing his ATM card withdrawing money from it, and transferring it to an unknown account (all of which he disovered much later).

After the complainant came to know about the matter, he informed the police on Tuesday. Cops from City Raikot police station started a probe, and booked an unidentified accused under Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Police officials said according to the complainant, the incident happened between 12noon and 1pm on February 2, so they were scanning the CCTV footage of the area to fish out clues about the accused. They added they were also trying to ascertain in whose account the money was transferred from the complainant’s ATM card.
