GURUGRAM: Students from classes 9-12 have not performed well in the Student Assessment Test (SAT) held in January, with only 54% managing to clear all papers. The SAT results came out this week as students are preparing to sit for the state board exams in March.

Nuh (Mewat) and Yamunanagar are at the bottom of the ladder with 37% pass percentage. Students in higher classes have not managed to do well in Gurgaon with only 54% clearing the exam. However, the city ranked first in the primary wing (classes 1 to 8) with 77% managing to clear the exam. In the primary wing, Palwal and Fatehabad registered the worst results with 60% pass percentage.

As part of the assessment, students of classes 1-12 have to sit for around six papers and have to score above 50 marks to pass each paper.

The assessment has found out that only 69% students of Class 1 understand and follow simple instructions in English. The district education department officials said that the students were required to study for better results. Prem Lata Yadav, the district elementary education officer (DEEO) said, “Students have to study more. We have provided them resources but it’s their responsibility to learn.”

In the entire state, only 50% Class 2 students were able to answer how they were going to spend Rs 50 if it was given to them in the Maths paper. In the English paper, these students did not know the correct use of words such as my, his, her, your and merely 61% gave the right answers. Only 67% could write the numbers which came before and after another number.

In the entire state, students have fared the worst in Social Science with only 30% managing to clear the paper. More than half have failed in the English paper with 32% managing to clear it. This is followed by 36% managing to clear the Maths paper.

In Gurgaon, 36% students from classes 9-12 managed to pass the social science exam while 37% could give right answers in the English paper. Only 39% Gurgaon students cleared the Maths paper.

Asked about the reasons behind this dismal performance, Satyanarayan Yadav, the state secretary of Haryana School Teachers’ Association said, “Our teachers try their best to bring kids to the classrooms but students are not studying as much as they should.”

Last year, the performance of the students in the state board exams was not up to expectations. Only 51.15% students had cleared the Class 10 boards while 63.84% had cleared the Class 12 boards.
