"Empire" actor Jussie Smollett has been charged with filing a false police report.
This is just the latest in a series of twists that have emerged since Smollett reported being attacked in late January.
Smollett told investigators two men yelled racist and homophobic slurs at him and that the men put a rope around his neck and poured a chemical substance on him.
Two men were arrested in connection to the suspected hate crime in early February, but police released them after "new evidence" was discovered.
Chicago police no longer consider the men to be suspects.
Following reports that the actor may have been involved in his own attack, Smollett released a statement denying he played a role.
Earlier on Wednesday, a Chicago Police Department spokesman said investigators were presenting evidence from the case before a grand jury. Filing a false police report is a Class 4 felony.
