Why is there no leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha currently?
The 16th Lok Sabha does not have a Leader of the Opposition. According to Parliament rules, the biggest Opposition party in the House has to have at least 10 per cent of the total strength of the Lok Sabha, or 55 seats, to be eligible for the post of Leader of Opposition.
If any party fails to get 10 percent seats in opposition, the House will not have recognised leader of the opposition. A single party has to meet the 10 percent seat criterion, not an alliance. The Congress has on 44 seats while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party from Tamil Nadu has 37 seats.
