On 21 February 2019, the presidency tweeted that Armed Forces Day "aims to unite all South Africans behind our military, allowing the SA National Defence Force to interact with communities and to expand public understanding of the military’s role and purpose to society."

Today South Africa celebrates Armed Forces Day, specifically marking the sinking of the SS Mendi in the English Channel in 1917 when over 600 SA Native Labour Corps members and 33 crew members died.

During Armed Forces Day, the public will be afforded an opportunity to interact with men and women in uniform and will be exposed to the capabilities of the country’s state-of-the-art military equipment. The Armed Forces Day is also a platform to test the SANDF’s logistic capabilities and state of readiness.
