NOIDA: A businessman and his younger brother have been arrested for allegedly killing the former’s pregnant wife over dowry.
The family of the woman has alleged that she was often tortured by her husband and his brother and sister as they were dissatisfied with the dowry given to them at the time of the couple’s wedding in May 2018.

Madhu Shah, who was originally from Chhapra in Bihar, was declared dead at Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital on February 18, hours after being admitted there.

Madhu’s cousin Pawan Kumar told TOI on Thursday that ever since she got married to Mukesh Kumar of Noida, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law had been torturing her over dowry, despite being given a bike, jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh, furniture and electronic equipment.

Pawan alleged his sister — who was not allowed to go even to the terrace of her husband’s house or speak to her family over phone — had been poisoned by Mukesh at the behest of his sister Jayanti, who stays in Jammu, minutes after she spoke to her mother over the phone on that fateful day.

“Around 6.40 pm, Mukesh had called us to inform that Madhu was unwell and we should take her to a hospital. However, Madhu was declared dead at the hospital the same day. When her father-in-law was informed about her death, he casually said that if she was dead, so be it,” Pawan said.

Madhu’s medical reports confirmed that she was two months’ pregnant with twins at the time of her death. “Madhu’s mouth was foaming and we suspect that she was poisoned by Mukesh. Her husband and his brother had broken the SIM card that was given to Madhu by me,” Pawan said.

Police said they arrested Mukesh and his younger brother Ram Babu, who stays in Bishanpura village of Sector 58, from near Mamura Chowk around 10.20 am on Thursday. Her post-mortem report is awaited.

Circle officer III Piyush Singh said, “The accused were arrested based on the FIR lodged in the matter on Tuesday under IPC sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 304B (dowry death) and under the Dowry Act lodged against Mukesh, Ram Babu and Jayanti.”

“The post-mortem report will take at least 15 days to reach us as the Delhi hospital will conduct a forensic investigation too,” he added.

The family has, meanwhile, demanded that the other accused, Jayanti, be arrested too.
