Paramedics diverted a 100-year-old war veteran to the hospital where his wife was being treated after he told them he hadn't seen her for a while - and even stopped on the way for him to buy her some flowers.

Medics were called to Macleay Island off Brisbane last week when war veteran David became injured.

After he told them his 94-year-old wife was in hospital and he hadn't seen her in some time, they decided to take him to the same hospital.

The paramedics, named Gareth and Tess, stopped at a florist on the way so David could buy his wife a bouquet.

After arriving at the hospital, paramedics took a heartwarming picture of the couple as David gave his wife the flowers.

The moving photo has gone viral online, with thousands praising the paramedics.

One commenter wrote: 'Give these guys a raise.'

Another said: 'This is true medical care. It's not all about medicine for the body. It's also about medicine for the mind.'

Queensland Ambulance Service said in a statement: 'When paramedics responded to a Macleay Island home last week on Valentine's Day Eve, they were greeted by 100-year-old veteran David.

'Officers Gareth and Tess soon learned that he usually lives independently at the address with his 94-year-old wife, however, he hadn't seen her in some time as she was being treated in a mainland hospital.

'The paramedics decided that a visit was long overdue, and although David's injury required transportation to a different Brisbane hospital, the paramedics sought permission to conduct a surprise visit to his wife's ward in Redland's Hospital along the way.

'Of course, Gareth and Tess knew better than to turn up empty-handed and first helped David pick up a bouquet of flowers.'
