HCBA to act on 1K lawyers for arrears default

Nagpur: The High Court Bar Association (HCBA) here has decided to act tough against lawyers who have failed to pay the annual subscription fees since the last three years. Its executive body led by president Anil Kilor and secretary Prafulla Khubalkar granted such lawyers another two weeks deadline to pay the huge arrears, accumulated over the years.
“The number of such lawyers is huge and many of them still use free facilities extended to them by the HCBA. The fees included free subscription of library and e-library and sitting at Bar Room No. 1,” Kilor said, while warning that these facilities would be stopped if they failed to clear the long pending dues.

Already, such lawyers were barred from exercising their franchisee during HCBA polls which is held every three years. The lawyers’ body charges just Rs1,800 for those who are practising from over 10 years and Rs1,200 for below that. It means, they need to pay Rs150 and Rs100 per month for annual subscription.

Khubalkar said they were already receiving about 50-100 applications from new lawyers for joining ever since their body took over last year. “We just want to grant a last chance to those who have failed to pay the arrears over the years. We will strike off their names from all lists after the deadline,” he said.

Kilor added that they were already facing severe crunch of space for accommodating the growing number of lawyers. “Currently, our capacity is hardly 700 and therefore we want to remove those who don’t regularly pay their dues. Those who want to renew their subscription should contact HCBA office on the ground floor, as we don’t have any online facility.”

The HCBA chief added that they had already stopped printing of daily cause list from October which helped save Rs6 lakh. TOI had first reported about HCBA’s move on September 5. “It also helped us to save a lot of manpower which was required to print and distribute it to lawyers’ homes. Now, we send the cause list to the members on their mobile phones,” he said.
