A 28-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a beach has been revealed to be the son of a Western Australian police officer.

Djron Michael Hansen is charged with sexually assaulting a 46-year-old woman as she walked along a beach path in Mullaloo about 5am on Christmas Eve last year.

Police allege the woman was grabbed from behind by the man, who was naked at the time, approximately 300 metres north of Mullaloo Beach northern car park.

He allegedly dragged the woman to the ground and covered her eyes and nose with a cloth, before he stuffed a piece of material in her mouth, Perth Now reported.

The court was on Thursday told the woman was sexually assaulted by the man until she was able to break free from his grasp after she bit him, it's alleged.

Following the alleged attack, the woman claimed she saw her naked attacker flee the scene on foot.

The 28-year-old Eglington man has since been charged with sexual penetration without consent.

Hansen, who wasn't required to enter a plea on Thursday, was refused bail by Magistrate Sandra De Maio who told the court there was 'strong prosecution case'.

The court also heard Hansen was charged after DNA allegedly found on the victim matched a sample he provided two weeks earlier for a separate sex offence.

No one has been charged over the separate sex offence.

Hansen's defence lawyer told the court his client came from a stable home, had no prior convictions and was the sole provider for his partner and two children.

The lawyer also described how the community should ensure the 'young indigenous man' - who is the son of a WA police sergeant - doesn't 'fall into custody'.

Hansen was remanded in custody and will face Perth Magistrate's Court on March 21.
