    Skipper Haylett-Petty extends Rebels stay

    2019-02-21 10:12

Melbourne - Newly-appointed Melbourne Rebels skipper Dane Haylett-Petty has signed a contract extension to remain with the Super Rugby team until the end of 2021, resisting overseas offers.

The 29-year-old, a mainstay of the Wallabies backline since making his debut against England in 2016, has flourished with the Rebels since arriving last year from the Western Force.

"I wanted to do what was best for my development as a rugby player, and that was to stay here in Australia and to continue my journey here at the Rebels and Wallabies," he said on Wednesday.

"There's no bigger honour - and challenge - than representing your country, and competing against the best teams and players in the world."

Haylett-Petty, who is expected to play a key role for the Wallabies at the World Cup this year, reportedly turned down lucrative offers from the Glasgow Warriors and several clubs in Japan.

The fullback started his professional career with the Western Force before starring for Biarritz in the French Top 14 and then in Japan's Top League for the Toyota Industries Shuttles.

"Dane is a real competitor and has quickly stepped up to the standard of Test footy," said Wallabies coach Michael Cheika.

"He's had that experience overseas which has helped mature him as a footballer and I know how desperate he is to have a big part to play in the World Cup later this year."
