MUMBAI: Central Railway (CR) is likely to open Parel Terminus for suburban services on March 3. The authorities are planning to operate around 20 services from Parel in the Kalyan direction to reduce overcrowding at Dadar. CR's divisional railway manager SK Jain confirmed the news. The terminus was necessitated because of a massive increase in footfall owing to Parel's transformation from a mill area to an office hotspot.
CR operates 16 services from Dadar, of which eight could be moved to Parel. Some services terminating at Kurla and CST could also be shifted. A senior CR official said, "We are still working on the time-table as the opening is still days away. Of the likely total of 20 services, 10 each will be in the up and down directions on the slow corridor."
The railways shifted attention to the Parel-Prabhadevi station complex after a stampede on the then Elphinstone Road station on September 29, 2017 resulted in the deaths of 23 people. At Parel, CR has also constructed an FOB which is connected to WR's under-construction FOB.
