Teachers go on mass casual leave

Teachers from various universities and colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh joined the rallyCHANDIGARH: Teachers of prominent universities and colleges joined the teachers of Panjab University for a rally demanding immediate implementation of the revised UGC pay scale under the 7th Central Pay Commission. Teachers from GNDU, PAU, Punjabi University, GADVASU, government and non-government colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh along with the PU teachers proceeded on a mass casual leave in response to the call by the Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers Organisations (PFUCTO) here on Wednesday.
For the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission, the government of India will meet 50% of the additional financial liability up to March 2019.
President of the Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) Prof Rajesh Gill demanded that the revised UGC pay scales should be implemented without any further delay. She pointed out that teachers of Haryana and many other states were already drawing salary in the revised pay scales.
“Almost all major states have implemented the new UGC pay scales and the neighbouring state of Haryana has even released the arrears with effect from Janaury1, 2016,” said Dr Jagwant Singh, general secretary, PFUCTO.
He criticised the Punjab government for contractual appointments and appointments on consolidated salary of Rs 15,600.
Dr B S Tohra, president, Government College Teachers Association (Punjab), highlighted the pitiable condition of government colleges in the absence of regular teachers.
“The strength of regular teachers at government colleges of Punjab is down to 510 against the cadre strength of 1,873,” he said.
Dr Brahm Ved Sharma, president, PCCTU, demanded immediate release of the pending salary.
Dr Sukhdev Singh Randhawa, general secretary, PCCTU, flayed the Punjab government for delay in regularising teachers.
Dr H S Kingra, president, PAUTA, said the delay in the implementation of the scales could have serious implications at the PAU, where large numbers of teachers were working under the ICAR schemes, whose funds would lapse on March 31, 2019.
