Youth Congress protests against ‘silence’ of cultural leaders

Youth Congress workers on Wednesday took out a march to the Kerala Sahitya Akademi here in protest against what they termed the silence of cultural leaders in a case of murder of two youths in Kasaragod.

They symbolically offered plantain stems to the cultural leaders, in protest against their alleged insensitivity and indifference towards the murders.

Inaugurating the protest, District Congress Committee general secretary John Daniel said it was high time Left-oriented cultural leaders underwent a people’s trial.

“Scared of public ire, even the CPI(M) State secretary has criticised the murders. But the cultural leaders, who write volumes even when a penguin falls sick in Antarctica, are still mum on the gruesome murders. If they fail to see the sorrow of the two poor families, they do not have any moral right to write any more. It is a shame on cultural Kerala,” he said.

The protesters said the writers who were mum now should not speak of justice and democracy any more.

“We are presenting plantain stem to the writers, who pledged their backbone at AKG Centre. They are scared of losing their position,” they said.
