Eight Chandigarh markets propose free parking, eight at low rates

An attendant guides a car at Sector 19 market, where parking is freeCHANDIGARH: As many as 16 market welfare associations have offered to run parking lots of their markets on their own — eight of them for free and the rest to charge Rs 5 for cars and Rs 2 for motorcycles.
The proposal will come up for approval at the general house meeting on February 28. If approved, terms and conditions will be prepared and a memorandum of understanding signed between the particular market welfare association and the civic body.

A delegation of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) on Wednesday met the municipal commissioner, handing him the list of all 16 parking lots.
“Eight market welfare associations will run the parking lots for free and the rest on no-profit, no loss basis. We will keep the proposal before the general house in its monthly house meeting. After its approval, terms and condition will be finalised for the MoU between the MC and associations,” said K K Yadav, municipal commissioner.
Free parking will reduce burden on shoppers: Trader body prez
Charanjeev Singh, chairman, Chandigarh Beopar Mandal said, “We held talks with all market welfare associations and 16 came forward. This move will reduce the financial burden on customers visiting the markets. Many more markets welfare association are also interested but will join once the 16 associations start managing the parking lots.”
Initially, the MC had decided to convert free parking into paid parking, but the general house asked the officials to ask the markets welfare associations if they are interested to run the parking lots for free or on no-profit, no-loss basis.
The parking lots that are proposed to run on no-profit, no-loss basis are Market Welfare Association, Sector 11D; Market Welfare Association, Sector 8B; Market Welfare Association, Sector 44D; Traders Welfare Association, Sector 21C; Capital Beoparies Association, Sector 19D; Traders Welfare Association, Sector 45-B; Progressive Traders Welfare Association, Sector 17, (opposite GPO Parking); Computer Market Association, Sector 20C
