Mysuru: Farmers held a protest on Wednesday demanding release of water from Kabini and KRS dam to the canals to fill the dry lakes.
Led by State Sugarcane Growers Association president Kuruburu Shantakumar, the protesters gathered at CADA office and shouted slogans against the state government. Shantakumar urged the irrigation department to release water to Kabini upper and lower canals, Hullahalli, Rampura, Devaraja Urs, Chikkadevaraya Sagara (CDS) and Ramaswamy canals so that the lakes and tanks in the region are filled.
“There is no water for cattle and standing crops are drying. Authorities should release water immediately. If water is released in a phased manner, farmers can save their crops. Cattle will survive the summer only if tanks are filled,” he said.
Shantkumar warned of a massive protest in the state if water is not released within a week.
Farmer leaders Attahalli Devaraj, P Somashekar, Kiragasuru Shankar and others were present.
