CALANGUTE: Deputy speaker Michael Lobo on Tuesday called for a law by which child abuse cases, including rape, are disposed of within a year.
He was speaking at the launch of an awareness drive against child abuse and rape at Calangute.
"One reason why people hesitate to speak out is also because of the lengthy disposal process which can go on for years. This should change and the cases should be time-bound. The timeframe for cases of abuse and rape should be one year," he said.
Lobo said incidents of sexual abuse are widely prevalent all over the country.
"In rural India if anybody tries to speak out against child abuse, then the community silences them. This needs to change. We need more effective laws and implementation of the laws.
