Auto gang strikes again, robs Jagraon man, 62, of Rs 87,000
TNN | Feb 20, 2019, 07:37 ISTLudhiana: The auto gang is on the prowl again. On Monday, it targeted an elderly man and robbed him of Rs 87,000 near Police Lines.
Surjit Singh, 62, a resident of Raikot Road, Jagraon, said in his police complaint, “My 36-year-old son Gupreet Singh is admitted to Hero Heart DMC Hospital, where he was operated upon five days ago. I was going to the hospital when I fell prey to the gang.”
Surjit, a labourer, was carrying Rs 87,000 he had arranged for his son’s treatment. “I had borrowed the amount from my friends. In the morning, I took a bus from Jagraon to Bharat Nagar Chowk. From there, I hired an auto-rickshaw to the hospital. Minutes later, two men, too, boarded the auto. When we reached near Police Lines, the two passengers started pushing me. The auto driver soon pulled over, saying the vehicle has developed a snag. As soon as I alighted from the auto, the driver started the ignition and the trio sped away. When I checked my pockets, I found the cash missing,” he said.
Surjit then called up the police.
“My son will be discharged in two to three days. But now, I do not have money to clear the hospital bills,” Surjit added.
Division 8 police station ASI Manjeet Singh said, “The CCTV cameras installed in the area had captured the auto’s registration number. When we approached its owner, he told that the auto had been sold. The owner could not pay the instalments and so, financiers seized the auto and sold it.”
The registration number of the auto had been shared with traffic cops. It would be traced soon, the ASI added.
A case has been registered under sections 379 (snatching) and 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.
