‘Students jaywalking near govt college a big concern’
TNN | Feb 20, 2019, 07:39 ISTLudhiana: These days students are found jaywalking near Government College for Girls despite there being an overhead bridge and pedestrian crossing nearby. Other places where people jaywalk include Ghumar Mandi road and Bhai Wala Chowk.
This is a concern as more than 25% of fatal accidents in the city involve pedestrians jaywalking. “At some spots there are traffic lights allowing both pedestrians and vehicles to move at the same time. This is highly dangerous. Either the vehicles should cross first or pedestrians,” said a city resident.
Paramjeet Kaur, a student at the government college says, “It requires quite a bit of walking to take the overhead bridge and simply crossing the road saves a lot of time.”
“I know it is dangerous, but I always look out for traffic, before stepping onto the road,” said another student.
To check the practice, grey metal railings were erected along the road and a ‘no-jaywalking’ sign was put up by the college authorities. However, that has still not prevented pedestrians especially students from jaywalking and they continue putting their lives at risk by being exposed to speeding vehicles.
