MKU sex scandal: Two released from Madurai prison

(Representative image) MADURAI: Suspended Madurai Kamaraj University assistant professor V Murugan and former research scholar S Karuppusamy, who were arrested in connection with a sex scandal case, were released from Madurai Central Prison on Wednesday morning, following the bail granted to them by the Supreme Court last week.
The duo’s family members and relatives turned up at the central prison to receive the accused, who had been lodged in the prison for 10 months.
Coming out of the prison, Murugan said it was a false case foisted against him and he would legally fight it out.
The case was registered in April 2018 by the Aruppukkottai town police under various sections, including attempt to traffic girls, following an audio tape containing conversations between Devanga Arts College assistant professor Nirmala Devi and girls students went viral.
Nirmala Devi had allegedly tried to lure a group of girls to do sexual favours for higher officials of MKU. She had offered marks and monetary benefits in return. The trio were arrested by the police and the case was subsequently taken over by CB-CID police.
The incident became sensational as it dragged the governor office into the scandal. It forced Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit to clarify that his office had nothing to do with the incident.
Murugan and Karuppsamy could not get bail despite repeated petitions in Srivilliputhur court. They moved the Madras high court but did not get any respite. On February 14, the SC granted bail for both of them.
Nirmala Devi is still lodged in the prison.
