Nagpur: In some good news for Nagpurians, the historic Deekshabhoomi would be developed at a cost of Rs 281 crore. It was informed by Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) and Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) through an affidavit in the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court on Monday.

It was submitted in response to a PIL by lawyer Shailesh Narnaware praying for directives to the Union and state governments to develop Deekshabhoomi on the lines of popular pilgrimage centres like Shirdi, Shegaon, Pandharpur, Trimbakeshwar and others.

The affidavit mentioned that the popular tourist place would be developed in two phases of which Rs100 crore would be spent on the first. It was informed that Design Associates Incorporation has prepared the overall development plan of Deekshabhoomi considering the existing facilities available within the premises.

Earlier, the petitioner contended that Deekshabhoomi not only has religious importance but also has social, cultural, and educational importance. The future generations must be educated about the teachings of Bharat Ratna Babasaheb Ambedkar, who is a source of inspiration, and therefore, the place must be developed properly, he had said. tnn
