A mother stole $1000 worth of produce from Coles to throw her daughter a graduation party in lieu of sending her to Schoolies.

Monique Nicole Sanchez pleaded guilty to stealing the groceries from Coles Nambour on the Sunshine Coast on November 19 2018.

Sanchez told the court she couldn't afford to send her teenage daughter to Schoolies, so offered to throw her a graduation party instead.

On the day of offending, she filled a trolley with approximately $500 worth of groceries, took them to her car and then went back inside the store and repeated.

A Coles employee noticed and called the police immediately, Sunshine Coast Daily reported.

Police pulled Sanchez over on her drive home, where she told officers she had paid for the goods in cash and refused a receipt.

Sanchez appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Wednesday alongside her daughter, where Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin described her as 'greedy'.

He said she hadn't committed a petty crime out of desperation to 'put food on the table', but had acted out of greed.

The court also noted Sanchez failed to appear in court on January 10 for separate charges.

She will now have to pay a $1,000 fine, $330 for the products she stole and has had a conviction recorded against her name.
