Pune: Motorist run over by dumper after colliding with stray cow

PUNE: Stray cattle menace on Vishrantwadi-Dhanorie Road claimed life of a 34-year-old man riding a scooter on Tuesday.

The motorist first collided with a stray cow that darted across the road and was ran over by a speeding dumper.


According to the police, the victim was heading for work. When he overtook a dumper ahead of him from the left side and hit a cow. Following the collision, the man fell on the road and came under the wheels of the dumper. He died on the spot.


Sub-inspector Jeevan Borse of the Vishrantwadi police said, “The man and the dumper were heading towards Vishrantwadi Chowk via Dhanorie octroi post. Investigations have revealed that the rider over took the dumper ahead of him from the left side. He hit a cow crossing the road when it suddenly came in front of his vehicle. He lost control over the vehicle and fell on right side. The dumper driver also failed to gain control over the speed hit him. He died due to multiple head injuries as he was not wearing a helmet.


“The driver of the dumper fled the spot fearing attack by a mob. He later surrendered himself before the police,” Borse added.


“After performing the post-mortem, we have handed over the victim's body to his brother’s friend. We have arrested the driver on charges of rash driving and causing death due to negligence among other charges of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act. Beat marshal Vausdeo Khade has lodged an FIR against the driver,” said a police official.
