Bengaluru may get waste-to-green plant in 6 months

BENGALURU: More than a decade after the BBMP began talking about a waste-to-energy (W2E) project, the city is on the verge of getting a power plant fuelled by garbage.
The Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) initiated the tendering process for setting up a plant on the outskirts of the city to produce 5 megawatt (MW) from garbage generated in the city. If all goes according to its plans, the project may become a reality in six months. But there are questions over whether the civic body will be able to fulfil its commitment towards meeting the power plant’s fuel needs.
The project will come up at Bidadi in Ramanagara district. With German firms joining the tender process, the pre-bid meeting is scheduled to be held later this month.
According to KPCL engineers, the project will cost Rs 70-100 crore; the 5MW W2E project is scalable up to 15MW capacity.
The BBMP and KPCL signed a memorandum of understanding on January 1 to supply refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to KPCL’s Bidadi site free of cost. In a recent letter to the Palike, KPCL managing director V Ponnuraj asked the civic body to supply 150-200 metric tonne (MT) of RDF for a week on a trial basis to the Bidadi site to enable the power utility to analyse characteristics of the fuel before finalising the plant’s design.
The BBMP sent two truckloads of RDF to Bidadi. “But sending 150MT of RDF on a daily basis for a week won’t be possible. Also, the BBMP does not have a palletiser, hence can provide only baled source feed to KPCL. The latter should look at setting up a 2MW plant initially, assuming a supply of 100MT of RDF daily, expandable to 5MW once dry waste collection is streamlined across all 198 wards,” said a BBMP engineer.
Status of other plants
Satarem, Kanahalli – Proposal pending before government
NEG, Mavallipura – Proposal pending
Indium, Doddabidarakallu – Bank guarantee submitted to BBMP. Agreement being vetted and will be signed next week
3 Wayste, Chikkanagamangala – Firm yet to revert on queries raised on the clauses, which unduly bind BBMP on financial grounds and administrative freedom.
Firm Green, Mavallipura – Company has been given in-principle nod by BBMP to conduct feasibility study to take up W2E plant at Mavallipura
