CHANDIGARH: A day after the municipal corporation (MC) scrapped the paid parking contract with Arya Toll Infra Limited, the civic body on Tuesday asked the UT SSP to initiate criminal action against the company after three of its cheques for Rs 1.5 crore (Rs 50 lakh each) bounced.

The MC also initiated the process to blacklist the firm. MC additional commissioner Tilak Raj said they have written to UT SSP to take action against the company for defaulting the amount. According to finance department rules, they will also blacklist the firm and the process has been initiated. The MC will also move court for legal action against the company, he added.

At the parking lots, confusion prevailed after MC employees started charging money for vehicles’ parking. People were seen arguing with the attendants for demanding a fee of Rs 20 from car drivers when there was no smart parking now. Haphazard parking also angered residents. The MC deployed staff from different divisions like road division of engineering wing to run the parking lots. With their deployment, the work of road division also suffered.

The new arrangement will be in place till further orders, according to fresh orders issued by the MC additional commissioner. MC commissioner K K Yadav said they will manage the parking lots with their staff. The next course of action for allotting the work to some other company and fixing the parking fee will now be decided by the MC general house in its next meeting. Till then, the MC will run the parking lots on the charges (Rs 10 for two-wheelers and Rs 20 for cars), he added.

On holding meeting with the representatives of the parking firm, he said if anybody wants to come to meet him, they are welcome. But he clarified the MC has not fixed any meeting with the company.

On Monday, the termination order of the parking contract was issued by the MC additional commissioner in which it was stated the contractor had failed to deposit the full amount of the seventh instalment of the licence fee amounting to Rs 3.69 crore due on December 2018.
