NEW DELHI: Most Delhiites would not imagine that they can be robbed at gunpoint on a busy arterial road in broad daylight. Nor did N K Tandon, a 66-year-old businessman, when he stepped out of his car to buy water on Noida Link Road at 1pm on Monday.
What happened next is an ominous teaser to the brazenness with which robbers and snatchers have begun operating in the capital.
“I had stepped out of the car to buy a water bottle from aroadside stall when two men came on a motorcycle. One of them swung open the car door and snatched the car keys,” Tandon later told cops. Travelling with Tandon were his wife Renu and nephew Punit, along with the nephew’s wife Mukta and their daughter. They were on their way to Chhattarpur to offer prayers at a temple.
Before Tandon could react or understand what was happening, one of the robbers dug a pistol in his stomach and asked him to hand over his valuables. The other youth held Tandon’s family at gunpoint. The senior citizen was made to part with his ring and Rs around 5,000 in cash. A gold chain was snatched off his wife Renu’s neck. The criminals also asked her to take off her ring but it was badly stuck and wouldn’t come off.
Just as swiftly as they had arrived, the youths left. Passersby and kiosk owners were too stunned to react. The family heaved a sigh of relief as the youths rode off. But it was short-lived. The bikers took a U-turn and returned. They warned the family of dire consequences if they reported the robbery to the cops.
According to police statistics, robberies showed a steep decline last year, falling to 2,444 as against 3,147 in 2017.
None of the robbers had faces covered
The men brandished their weapons before the family one last time before finally driving off on their motorcycle. Later, the victims alerted the cops and told them about the incident. DCP (east) Jasmeet Singh said a case under sections of robbery, criminal intimidation and arms act has been registered at the Mayur Vihar police station.
The probe so far has revealed that the two men were aged 25-30 and came on a black/grey motorcycle. CCTV footage from the area and along the Noida Link Road is being scanned to gather more details of their appearance and the registration number of the motorcycle.
Neither robber had covered his face. Based on the information provided by the family, police plan to create sketches and also scan the dossiers of criminals matching their description. Local informers are also being activated to generate intelligence on the men.
