Biju Phukan Award for veteran actor Bishnu Kharghoria

Dibrugarh: Veteran Assamese actor Bishnu Kharghoria was conferred the Biju Phukan Award, 2019 in a ceremony held at the Chowkidinghee playground here on Monday evening.

Kharghoria, who started his career as a child artist, has acted in several polular movies besides mobile theatre. He had previously received the National Film Award for the movie ‘Xagoroloi Bohudoor.’


The award has been instituted for the first time jointly by Assam State (Film and Finance) Development Corporation (ASFFDC) and the directorate of cultural affairs in memory of actor Biju Phukan. Phukan, who played the lead role in several popular Assamese films like ‘Dr Bezbaruah’, ‘Aranya’, ‘Ajoli Nabou’, ‘Bohagor Duporiya’, ‘Aparoopa’ and ‘Pita-Putra’, had passed away on November 22, 2017. He was 70.


The award was handed over by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the presence of cultural affairs minister Naba Kumar Doley, MP Rameshwar Teli, MLAs Prasanta Phukan and Rituparna Baruah. The award carries Rs 2 lakh, a citation and shawl. On the ocassion, Sonowal also released ‘Bijubaibhav’, a coffee table book on the life and works of the illustrious actor.
