Since the news of Honda’s plans to close its Swindon factory leaked yesterday, two shifts have changed over.
Two sets of workers have gone home, two more sets have arrived at work. Only today have those on the current shift been sent home to deal with and process this ‘shock’ announcement – which they could've read every detail about since yesterday afternoon on every major website and in every newspaper in the country.
You may have seen several of them being interviewed through their car windows, or heard them on the radio, and all said the same when asked their reaction to the plant’s proposed closure in 2021: "We don’t know anything. Honda has told us nothing. You know more than us."
It was actually quite cringeworthy and uncomfortable listening to reporters, who did indeed know more, detailing the precise reasons for the closure and asking workers questions that affected their livelihoods and the futures of their families.
What became clear was that there hadn't been a word from Honda – a company built on integrity – to its workers, nor the unions that represent them. It was sticking to its plan of making this ‘surprise’ announcement at 8am. And surprise surprise it came, with Honda at last sticking its head out of the sand.

Don't worry, your next Honda will be made in China
Once all the dust has settled they'll be importing these Honda's from China!!! (And Swindon will just be a distant memory like Southampton, Longbridge, Dagenham, Luton, Ryton, Browns Lane,................the list is endless) Meanwhile in Mainland Europe the Germans have closed one plant in the last 20 years.........& the French 2.........
We do we let it happen so easily?

Brexit
Brexit has created a hostile environment that facilitates these investment decisions. Honda was burnt by the UK on the sale of Rover to BMW - and the Japanese are being burnt again with the narrow vote for Brexit...
I work for an Automotive OEM and send my commiserations to my brothers and sisters at the Swindon Plant.
Despite what MPs are saying, Honda doesn't make diesel cars in significant volumes and Swindon doesn't export to China. Those excuses are nonsense.
Some of us need to swallow our pride and admit we were duped on Brexit. Just days left till the gun wound to the foot becomes a permanent disfigurement.

Honda not to blame
I don't think Honda is entirely to blame for this story to be published before the Swindon workers were told. The discussions must have been going on for some time, possibly involving lawyers, government the supply chain etc. With a story of this magnitude, it's almost inevitable that a leak would occur.
And given the low production from the plant over the last decade and poor European sales, the decision probably wasn't a hard one to make.
If anything I think Honda should be applauded for staying loyal to the plant for so many years in difficult circumstances. other companies would have given up sooner.

State Aid
It's unfortunate we're unable to ignore EU rules and offer State aid to auto plants as occurs in both France and Germany.
As the government are major shareholders in the companies residing there, they are able to offer significant assistance to keep plants open.
Of course, with the UK leaving the EU, this will no longer be a problem for us. Creating fertile ground for new plants needs to be a priority - in addition to aiding Services (which are really what keeps us afloat).
