PM Modi takes dig at Rahul for mocking Vande Bharat Express

VARANASI/NEW DELHI: In what appeared to be a dig at the opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asked people to give the “right punishment at the right time” to those who mocked the country’s first semi high-speed train, Vande Bharat Express, and the government’s ‘Make in India’ programme.

Without taking any name, Modi said, “When our engineers are converting a diesel locomotive into an electric engine and rolling out semi-high speed train, some people are insulting our best scientific brains. These politicians should not be forgiven. I am confident our scientists will run bullet trains in future.”

The remark was seen as a response to the comment by Congress president Rahul Gandhi who had targeted the government after Vande Bharat Express developed technicals snags on it inaugural run, a day before the commercial operations started.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav had also criticised the government’s performance comparing it with the breakdown of the train during its return journey from Varanasi to Delhi.

Applauding the success of railway engineers for this indigenous product, Modi said the country is proud of the engineers and their hard work.
