With summer fast approaching and drying up of the Singur reservoir and Manjeera river, Sangareddy is staring at a severe water crisis. Dealing with water woes of the district would be a herculean task for the administration.

Water level dips

The water level at Singur in the second week of February stood at 1.6 tmcft, which is a cause of worry for the authorities concerned. Officials stated that the current water reserves of Manjeera may be sufficient till the second week of March, but after that they have to look for alternative sources.

This apart, the ground water levels in the district were rapidly plummeting with borewells drying up.

Memorandum submitted

Pointing towards the water crisis at Nyalakl and Jarasangam areas, local public representatives, Sunita Patil and Sharada, submitted a memorandum to the Zilla Parishad chairman urging him to address the problem immediately. Villages at Jinnaram, Gummdidala, Kandi, Sadashivapet and Kondapur, among others were facing the same situation.

Officials gear up

Collector M. Hanumantha Rao directed the officials to hold a meeting with field staff to address the issue. The officials were asked to talk to the newly-elected sarpanches about water conservation. Mr. Rao also spoke of linking agriculture bores near villages for water supply.

“We are making contingency plans to address the issue. Officials and public representatives have been directed to take adequate measures,” said V. Venkateswarlu, district panchayat officer.
